When This Fashion Blogger Got It Wrong

When This Fashion Blogger Got It Wrong | Style in a Small TownAs I was editing these pictures the other day, there was something about them that I didn’t like. I love the backdrop. I scouted it out specifically to go with this outfit. I love these culottes, they had been in my shopping cart for weeks before I actually bought them. And I how cute is this choker top? I’ve been anxiously searching for just the right thing to wear it with, but this, this just wasn’t it. This is the tale of how this fashion blogger got it wrong.

As fashion bloggers, there is a myth that we always get it right. That we always wear exactly the right thing or that our outfits always work. Well, this one is proof that we don’t, or at least I don’t!

Top: Wayf (similar, here and here – only $33!) // Culottes: Asos // Heels: Target – less than $30! // Earrings: Baublebar // Bag: Old Navy – only $25! // Sunnies: Ray-Ban // Ring: Baublebar // Watch: Daniel Wellington c/o

I’m so bummed this one didn’t work. I even tried this on together at home so that I would have the look ready for the shoot. But I went against my number one rule…. and that’s balance. If you’re wearing something oversized or flowy on top, you need to wear someting a little more form fitting on the bottom, and vice versa. This top just doesn’t work with these culottes because when it’s tucked in, it billows over the top, causing too much volume.

So tell me, what outfits have you tried that have been flops? We all learn from our mistakes, right?

As always, thanks for reading!

xoxo, Hillary

  • If it helps, I think you look great! I didn’t even notice anything was off.

  • I actually think this look works girl. Sometimes it’s ok to break the rules!!

    • Thanks, Meghan! Rules are meant to be broken, right!? xx

  • I actually think this outfit is really cute! I have been there though – sometimes outfits are a lot better in our head than when they’re on. Happens all the time

    • Omg, this happens to me so much! I’ve learned my lesson to try it all on first and not think that it’ll just look amazing in my head! Lol Thanks, Lindsay! xx

    • Thanks, girl! I wasn’t so sure about it! xx

  • I honestly love this look! But I know what you mean – sometimes your outfit just doesn’t feel right! At my shoot last week, I put on a dress that didn’t even fit me – it was too small. (I didn’t try it on before the shoot!) and I had to abandon ship. Talk about a confidence blow!

    • Hahaha abandon ship! I love it! It’s too bad it was too small though, what a bummer!! 🙁 Hopefully you were able to get it in a size that fit you! Thanks, Maggie! xx

  • Girl, you’re crazy! I absolutely love this look on you. I love when outfits push the porportions a little bit – some of my favorite looks are like this! I so love your honesty though.

    • You’re so sweet, Lauren! Thank you! I like to put this limits a little too, but I thought I’d pushed this one a little too far! Ha xx

  • Cristin Cooper

  • Rita

It is not flop at all, in fact I love how you styled your outfit. Love the color combination and looks very chic.
    Rita | http://www.styleroundtheclock.com

    • Aw, thanks Rita! You’re very sweet! xx

  • I don’t think this is a flop at all, but I totally understand the feeling of not always getting it right! I just had that happen to me in my last shoot- my favorite dress photographed terribly & I can’t use the pictures at all- I look blue in all of them! ha. Just goes to show we’re human, right?! 🙂

    • Haha SO true, girl! I hate how it can look so good IRL and then photograph terribly! I’m sure you looked adorable anyways! xx

  • I don’t think this is a flop but I get how your feel. I have shot looks that I wasn’t happy with. We are so hard on ourselves. I think you pulled this off perfectly because of your height. The vertical stripes help lengthen your frame as well. I really love how chic and sophisticated this outfit is!

    http://www.kathrineeldridge.com

    • Thank you so much, Kathrine! That’s really nice of you to say. Yes, we are all human and we definitely can be very hard on ourselves. I know I’m guilty of this! I hope you’re having a great weekend! xx
